In the phase-I of the Ganga Action Plan, the pollution abatement works at Kanpur
were executed with financial assistance from the Royal Netherlands Govt. These works
could take care of only 171 mld. of sewage discharging into the river Ganga. However,
as the waste water generation in the town is about 371 mld, therefore, 200
mld is still finding its way into the river. The further works required to intercept,
divert and treat the remaining 200 mld of sewage, along with works for water supply
improvement and rehabilitation, low cost sanitation and solid waste management have
been taken up in GAP (Phase-II) . This project at Kanpur has been named as Ganga
Action Plan-Support Project (GAPSP) and for execution of the same, a grant agreement
between the Govt. of India and the Royal Netherlands Govt. has been entered into
in July, 1997 for financial support of NLG 51.24 million, i.e., Indian Rs. 105 Crore.
The present approved C.C.E.A. cost for Kanpur town is Rs. 90.29 Crore.
