 • GANGA ACTION PLAN-SUPPORT PROJECT, KANPUR

In the phase-I of the Ganga Action Plan, the pollution abatement works at Kanpur were executed with financial assistance from the Royal Netherlands Govt. These works could take care of only 171 mld. of sewage discharging into the river Ganga. However, as the waste water generation in the town is about 371 mld,  therefore, 200 mld is still finding its way into the river. The further works required to intercept, divert and treat the remaining 200 mld of sewage, along with works for water supply improvement and rehabilitation, low cost sanitation and solid waste management have been taken up in GAP (Phase-II) . This project at Kanpur has been named as Ganga Action Plan-Support Project (GAPSP) and for execution of the same, a grant agreement between the Govt. of India and the Royal Netherlands Govt. has been entered into in July, 1997 for financial support of NLG 51.24 million, i.e., Indian Rs. 105 Crore. The present approved C.C.E.A. cost for Kanpur town is Rs. 90.29 Crore.
Out of total 17 proposed schemes under GAPSP, 16 schemes (14 by GOI and 2 by GoUP) have been approved for a total cost of Rs. 115.42 Crore against which 4 schemes have been completed. Scheme for 200 mld STP costing Rs. 67.17 crore  is still under process of approval with Govt. of India. The financial assistance from Netherlands Govt. has been stopped and the project is being financed by GOI as centrally sponsored scheme. An expenditure of Rs. 71.267 Crore has been incurred up to the end of December 2005.
